Melody Nelson is a fictitious
character who appears on Serge Gainsbourg's 1971 release
'Histoire de Melody Nelson'. The record, often referred to
as a 'concept' album, tells the story of a man falling in
love with a young redheaded tomboy girl, Melody, who tragically
dies on a plane crash a few months after their encounter...
The story, told in 27 minutes and 7 songs, is a timeless piece of work
flirting between rock and classical. 'Histoire de
Melody Nelson' is one of my favorite albums of all
time.
Born Lucien "Lulu" Ginsburg in the late 1920s, Serge Gainsbourg
was one of the most important figures in French popular
music of the 20th Century. In addition to creating his own musical
work, he composed music for dozens of French singers as well as directed and starred in films.
He also was an accomplished painter. Serge was provocative, funny, scandalous, ahead
of his time... He was a master of words and loved to mix English with French.
He also smoked and drank in excess. Serge died of
a heart attack on March 2nd, 1991. He is survived by his four children, Natacha, Paul, Charlotte and Lulu.
