patient eye
This happens to me a lot. I accumulate and carry around new CDs for weeks (sometimes months), and often it takes me forever to get around to listening to some of them, as i tend to forget that my purse is not my DJ bag. Some albums get transferred to my listening device rather quickly, but others just end up camping in the handbag until i get to the point where i start wondering why my right shoulder/hand hurt so much.
I finally took the Midnight Movies EP out of the city tote, and before listening, i tried hard to remember if i had ever heard their previous releases. But i can definitely answer no to that question. I would have recalled their sound, and singer Gena Olivier's haunting voice. Her vocal style reminds me of Laetitia Sadier's a little, though musically, the band is way moodier than anything Stereolab has ever put out. I read some compare them to Joy Division as if fronted by Nico, and i can sort of hear that, but would add that Midnight Movies sounds a bit more ethereal. They have an album out on New Line Records next month, and believe me, that one won't camp out in my bag for too long.

A few gig reminders:
- Tonight, I'm spinning at Lotus downstairs with Michael T. If you say the magic word at the door (melody nelson), you not only get in for free, but are also are guaranteed a great time.
- Tomorrow night, i will be deejaying a french pop set and will be joining on stage the very talented Die Romantik to sing a few Serge Gainsbourg covers. Earfarm is presenting this lovely event, which i'm very excited to be a part of. Note that there will be an hour of free Pastis served...

- Even more exciting (as if possible), i will be making my DJ debut on East Village Radio this sunday march 4th from 4 to 6pm. This will hopefully be the first of a weekly show (final slot TBD). My show will be, as you can guess, all french pop! If you're a lover of everything yé-yé, oldies, chanteuses, 70's party jams and classic 80's pop/rock, then tune in and join me this sunday at 4pm EST. EVR is an internet radio station, so anyone in the world with a computer and an internet connection can listen to its live streaming. The show on sunday will be archived as well, in case if you miss it, you can always listen to it later.
