poupée de cire

I just listened to Arcade Fire doing a live cover of France Gall's Poupée de cire, poupée de son, and i love it! I found it here, it's a great cover of an incredibly fun song (there's also a cover by Belle & Sebastian on the site). For those who came to see me sing with Die Romantik last year at Hiro, it was the last song we played, and if you're coming to Union Hall next saturday, we'll be playing it again. It's just one of these tunes that are so enjoyable to perform. Here's the original:

France Gall :: Poupée de cire, Poupée de son [YOUSENDIT]

For the little story, Serge Gainsbourg wrote this song for France Gall to sing at the 1965 Eurovision competition (she was representing Luxembourg). Up to that point, Serge had been highly critical of everything yé-yé (the commercial pop genre that defined the 1960's in France), but decided to give in to writing such pop songs, without completely losing his integrity. In fact, in my opinion, he was able to elevate the bubble gum genre to a whole new different level, smart yet still accessible and fun. France Gall ended up winning the grand prize with the song, and Serge later declared that she saved his career, which had been somewhat disappointing, hard to get, and underground for a number of years (despite featuring a rich catalogue of amazing songs).

Tonight, CALLING ALL KIDS is back and i'm so excited to have Rob Sheffield guest DJ for us. Rob just released his debut novel, Love is a mix tape. I don't know anyone who has read the book who did not love it. The story is absolutely captivating and told so gracefully. And of course, if you're a fan of music, you'll appreciate how the mix tapes are an integral part of the journey. It's a must-read. Tonight, Rob will play a mix of songs that will be sure to take you back, and make you dance.
Drink specials are 2-4-1 from 10 to 11pm and again from 3-4am. The admission is $5, but only $3 if you print this flyer. See you later!

love, love, love (love, love)

If you were supposed to go see Stellastarr* play at Gramercy Theater this week, note that the show has been moved to march 7th.

Over the weekend, i got to put my new fancy camera to work on the set of Adam's latest video for the band As Tall As Lions. I couldn't be happier with the camera; for a first time use, i ended up with a few beautiful shots. It may not be saying much considering the video is going to look amazing. Needless to say, after spending 9 hours at the shoot, the song has not only grown on me, but is also completely stuck in my head. Sign of a hit, maybe?

On the set of Love, love, love (love, love), As Tall As Lions' first music video.
