disco 2006
I've got a couple of DJ gigs this weekend. First, tonight at Lotus for LOADED. Michael T. and i will be downstairs, 10 to 4am. We hide underground (upstairs at Lotus is a much different place), play some good'ole new wave and rock, and we have a lot of fun. Say "melody nelson" at the door for complimentary admission.
Tomorrow night, i will be at Tiswas 2.0 @ The Annex (152 Orchard St.). Another great party if you want to hear new indie, 80's, dance-rock, etc... I should be on downstairs all night.
I'm quite fond of this article about The MisShapes "phenomenon". I've been a supporter of the kids and the party for a long time. I think that what they're doing is great. I'm pretty certain that before Greg K., there were very few DJs in the city (Ultragrrrl is another one who comes to mind) who actually played all music and genres they loved without shame or guilt - anybody who remembers the early days of MisShapes would remember the crowd going completely nuts when Greg would play I wanna dance with somebody sandwiched between The Smiths and Le Tigre. That refreshing approach to mixing music has always been the big strength of the party - not everyone likes it, but it was definitely different from anything else going on at the time (these days, a lot more DJs play a similar mix). There's also no question that the party arrived at a time when the rock nightlife in nyc was becoming a little too monotonous. The MisShapes were able to tapped into a younger crowd who needed a club to go to and a group of people to relate to. It's become evident that through the music, party photos, friends & celeb guest DJs, they have created this image and vision that has inspired youngsters everywhere, as well as party promoters, DJs and fashion designers. Good for them!

It's not all hair and glitter, here The MisShapes wear the Edun t-shirt in support of the ONE campaign. The photo was taken by Helena Christensen.

masculin féminin
Sheila B. writes a great article on Chantal Goya: the Yé-Yé years, highlighted by her starring role in Jean-Luc Godard's Masculin Féminin. One of Godard's best movies by the way, a must-see. Unfortunately not a lot of us (who grew up hearing her astrocious bubble gum children songs) remind ourselves enough that Chantal was once a cool girl in the mid-60's.
Check out the Motherfucker crew in New York TImes magazine as part of the new Bohemian series.
The Filles Sourires blog celebrates it's one year anniversary with a lovely mix of mostly Serge Gainsbourg covers (by various bands) for everyone to download.
When To bring you my love came on my itunes today, it prompted me to wonder what Miss Polly Jean Harvey was up to these days. Granted i never gave Uh Huh Her a proper listening chance or a cherished place in my record collection, nor have i really kept up since the release and shows in 2004, PJ Harvey still remains one of my favorite musicians of all time. So i decided to check on her official web site for news of an album, only to find out that i missed out on a release of a DVD?
PJ HARVEY: FIRST EVER DVD RELEASE CONFIRMED
We are pleased to bring you exclusive news that the first ever PJ Harvey DVD will be released world-wide by Island Records on May 1st 2006 (May 23rd in the US) . Titled “PJ Harvey On Tour – Please Leave Quietly” and directed by Maria Mochnacz, it was filmed during the Uh Huh Her Tour and offers an intimate and insightful look into a world of touring, performing and travelling.

PJ Harvey - On Tour: Please Leave Quietly
The DVD has been out in the US since may 2006, and i had no idea. But it's never too late to catch on as it is now on its way to my apartment. The set list looks great, so i'm hoping this documentary does justice to her outstanding live performances.
