all sparks

Last wednesday, i went to see Fiona Apple play live at Summerstage and while i appreciate that the girl gives her all (and more) during live shows, i just couldn't take the over the top antics this time. Maybe it was seeing her in an outdoor venue in the heat, but her screaming and sometimes rapping (!) of the songs distracted me too much from appreciating the performance. And i'm pretty sure this is the most possessed she's ever looked on stage, or at least that i have ever witnessed... There were good moments and surprises though, such as The way things are, one of her best songs, and a very intense Slow like honey. By the end of the show, she seemed to have calmed down a bit, which reminded me of that amazing performance she gave back in december. Frankly, i much prefer the "happier" Fiona these days... but then again, she's so unpredictable and somehow you gotta love her for that.

Last week was a good one for shows, i also caught Editors play a short acoustic set, which i enjoyed more than expected. At the band's request, i deejayed at Niagara for their Irving Plaza afterparty later that night and had a really great time making the big crowd sweat until closing. The next day, i even felt like listening to the The back room, which i rarely do. And you know what? It's actually quite good.

I did miss all of The Long Blondes stage appearances in new york last week, but wanted to make sure to mention them because i think they're fantastic. The fact that Steve Mackey produced their debut album definitely adds to my excitement of getting my hands on it.

News and links:
Today is the release of the tribute album Monsieur Gainsbourg Revisited. Get it, but make sure to get real Gainsbourg albums as well - some of the songs on the tribute record are great, but nothing like the originals.

Adam Wormseye talks about the new Aberdeen City video.

I find this new Yeah Yeah Yeahs video very cute:
