22 grand job
I've recovered from the world cup final weekend, which left me drained and heartbroken... objectively speaking and solely based on the dynamic of the game, the italians did not deserve to win, right? Ok, as long as we all agree on that. And it was a sad and unexpected ending for Zizou's career as well, but it's all over now. I'm still happy we made it to the final and i can finally stop talking about soccer and go back to music. My local french joint was playing this fun and cheesy faux-anthem called Zidane y va marquer all day during the final, and we all had fun singing along and changing the lyrics to make them even more stupid, you download the tune here. Also for those who speak french, you can watch Zidane on french national TV explaining what happened during the match.
CALLING ALL KIDS is on tonight, with Carmine Filthy as our guest DJ and a vodka special all night! Sapphire is located at 249 Eldridge St. between Stanton and Houston. I've said this before and i'll say it again, best wednesday night party! If you haven't stopped by yet, now is the time.
Last wednesday, i went to my first Rakes show. I remember initially hearing them, way back when, when their first single came out in the UK. At first, it's easy to dismiss The Rakes as another Franz wannabe disco-punk band, but honestly they are quite excellent at not re-inventing the wheel. Their debut album is probably one of my favorites this year, full of infectious funky rock tunes that are just perfect for the dance floor. Live they were straightforward, energetic and humble. They opened the show with 22 Grand Job, probably their best song and went on to play most of the album with the utmost stage joy. We were secretly hoping for a live rendition of their fantastic cover of Serge Gainsbourg's Le Poinceonneur des Lilas (renamed Just a man with a job), but no luck there. After the show, we hosted the after-party at CAK where drummer Lasse DJed for a good hour playing everything from Hot Chip to Blondie to Gnarls Barkley to Pulp. The kid definitely knows his hits and made everyone dance all night long. The Rakes are currently on tour in the US.
