requiem pour un con
Miss Modernage, what are you doing posting melody nelson content on your blog?! i kid, of course... Laura wrote, and posted a couple of MP3s, about the new Serge Gainsbourg tribute album set to be released here on february 27th and titled Monsieur Gainsbourg Revisited. Here are a couple of articles about it, one in french and one in english for you to choose from. The track list looks great, and i like a lot of the acts on it, but my first impression upon listening to Je t'aime... moi non plus covered by Cat Power (Serge part) and Karen Elson (Jane/Brigitte part) is that it just sounds so bizarre. Je t'aime... is one of those very hard to cover songs, and even harder to translate. I think the translation bothers me more so than the interpretation... but who knows maybe it will grow on me. I, however, can not wait to hear Jarvis do a cover of Je suis venu te dire que je m'en vais. And Carla Bruni's on it too! Not only do i love her music, but also she did an amazing cover of La Noyée on her debut album. So overall, this record sounds promising. Here's a cover of Requiem pour un con (not on the tribute album). It's live, straightforward and just really good.

Jane and Serge.
Changing gears... last night, i deejayed at a party where LA band The Like played a 5 song set, and quite frankly, i was surprised to like what i heard (and surprised by how young they look!). The singer's beautiful voice is definitely what got me, while the music stands on the melodic pop with a rock edge side of things. The more i listen, the more i like The Like (ha! i'm so fucking hilarious... and tired!). They're playing at the knitting factory in new york tonight and you can hear some songs here.

les play boys
Last night's LE ONE NIGHT STAND at Joe's Pub was phenomenal! It's fair to say that there's no other party like this one right now in new york, and it's just great to see that everyone enjoys it so much. At the next one in late march, i promised myself to make mixed CDs of all the french music i play to hand out to the crowd as a thank you for the support. Also, to give you a hint the next one will be BIG... our biggest night yet, and it will be all about Serge Gainsbourg! I won't say anymore, but be prepared.
Since we're on a french theme here, i'm going to direct you to Jen's post about Vive La Fete, a band from Belgium that more than one person had mentioned to me lately. Turns out they sound just as good as everyone's claiming them to be, well at least from the one song i heard called Noir Désir (download here).
And my treat to you all is a little Jacques Dutronc song, appropriate for today... enjoy!
