la bohème
First off i should mention that the weekly party Cheeky B*stard is on indefinite hiatus. I joined the party after the GBH promoters moved it from Hiro to Guesthouse, but changing venues doesn't always work out, so for now the party is on hold. A bit of a shame since i was their new resident DJ, however, i'm working on a new very exciting weekly party and will unveil the details very soon. It's all good.
Also very exciting was that last night i went to my very first Opera! You'd think that 18 years in Paris and 7 years in New York (with 4 years of college in between) would have brought me to the Opera at least once in my life. My knowledge of classical music to begin with is a bit limited (working on changing that), but i realized that my knowledge of Opera was practically nonexistent. So when i shared that piece of information with my friend Jocelyn, her immediate reaction was to buy us some tickets to go see La Bohème at the Metropolitan Opera (at Lincoln Center). What a great idea of hers, because i absolutely loved it! I read a bit of the tragic story before going, though i really enjoyed the fact that you could read the english translation in front of your seat as the performance went by. As for the performance itself, well, what can i say besides that i was in complete awe of the vocal delivery, acting, and theatrical experience but the most amazing part was the production and set designs which were unbelievable. Not to mention, The Metropolitan Opera is a beautiful place, just seating there looking around was a pleasure. I think i'm hooked, next i plan on seeing Carmen!

jackie

It's become somewhat of a tradition for me to listen to old records on the weekend, you know the good'ole classics. It's a nice break from listening to the endless number of new bands.
Lately, i've been infatuated with the music of Scott Walker, who found "teen" success with his band The Walker Brothers in the UK (even though he's from Ohio) in the 1960's before going solo and releasing a series of albums and soundtracks. I first got introduced to Scott Walker a few years ago with his amazing collection of Jacques Brel songs in english. Scott is obviously a huge Brel fan as can be heard in the dramatic and orchestral arrangements of his own material. I find it quite courageous to take on Jacques Brel in english, for his lyrics and choice of topics are quite complex, but Scott Walker manages to keep the themes without trying to translate literally, which is probably the best way to tackle such a big task. My favorite thing about Scott is his incredibly deep and warm voice, probably one of the best voices of the 20th century. He is supposed to be coming out with a new album on 4AD in the near future. Not too long ago, he produced the last Pulp album, We love life (interestingly enough Jarvis Cocker has a similar vibrato). I'm posting two of my favorite songs, the first is an original, the second is a Jacques Brel cover. Listen to those tunes on a lazy sunday afternoon and enjoy...
Scott Walker :: Montague Terrace (in Blue) [yousendit] - originally appearing on the album Scott.
Scott Walker :: Jackie [yousendit] - originally appearing on the album Scott 2, but can also be found on the Scott Walker sings Jacques Brel compilation album. The original song by Jacques Brel is called La Chanson de Jacky.
