original sin
Interesting post on Ultragrrrl regarding the INXS reality show being a scam... i was just gonna write about how appalled i am by the whole concept of the show. I've watched a couple of episodes, and they both made me nauseous. It's too bad because INXS was such a good band.
I recently realized that until now, i had never listened to Nada Surf... i remember everyone praising Let Go, and meaning to get it, but never did. Well, things change and for the better, because i've been listening to the new album The weight is a gift (out 9/13) and it is fantastic! Rarely do i listen through a full album and go right back into it, but that's what i've been doing with this one. Here's one of my favorite songs off the record:
Nada Surf :: Do it again [mp3]

blood
Tonight at ATOMIQUE @ Lit (downstairs), newish band Split Over Drapes will play right before us DJs do our thing... I've heard a lot great things about them, so i'm excited to see them. They're on at 11pm, it's $5 to see the bands and no cover afterwards.
Like most right now, i've been listening to the Editors debut album, which is really good and catchy with some songs (the singles) better than others. I just don't hear the Joy Division comparison, Editors are a lot more straightforward and predictable. As for the Interpol comparison, both singers share a similar vocal pitch, but again, Interpol's music is structurally quite different. Obviously, i don't know if Editors are intentionally trying to sound like Joy Divison, but they certainly are trying to emulate their image... doesn't the cover album scream early Peter Saville?

gift of noise
So july was a bit too relaxed on this blog, i gotta try to update a little more often! Here's some local news...
August is the month for residencies:
The GoStation will be playing every monday in august, starting tonight, at Arlene's Grocery, and all the gigs are FREE! They go on at 8:30pm.
SOFT will be playing three thursdays at The Delancey starting this week. The Harlem Shakes and Saints and Lovers will be opening on the 11th.
Here's a local band i have not mentioned before, Your New Best Friend. A really solid band with stand out vocals and a sound that reminds me of Spoon at times and a bit of Elliot Smith as well. They're playing on tuesday at the Pussycat Lounge and again at Pianos on august 12th. Here's a song:
Your New Best Friend :: Father [MP3]
On thursday night, you can check out an amazing lineup of all favorite locals playing for a great cause. The show was originally going to take place in Jersey, but got relocated in the city. It's $15 (advance) with all profits going to the cancer fund. All details below and at this web site.
