eternal sunshine

Tonight, i make my monthly appearance at Lit upstairs as part of Aktion hosted by Justine D. I'll be spinning from 11 to 4am. While i'm upstairs, members (i believe Paul) of Franz Ferdinand will be DJ-ing along Michael G. downstairs. A definite good time.

I have to say it's always so great having guest djs and afterparties at my gigs, but seeing Michel Gondry dance amongst the crowd at this week's ATOMIQUE was especially exciting to me. So cheers to that.

Yesterday was Vince's birthday, today it's Gina's, and tomorrow it's Kari's and Matt's... Happy birthday fellow geminis!

I still haven't figured out the issue with my comments! As soon as i have time to look into it, i'm hoping to fix them.

The Dirty Things, who played Rothko last night, will be playing at Lit tonight - followed by weekly dance-rock party ATOMIQUE! If you're a fan of the new crop of post-punk outfits and of old schoolers like Gang of Four and XTC, you'll most certainly like this band. And live, they just completely explode like a good punk band should. Listen here:
The Dirty Things :: Stop [mp3]

Last night, local band Dasher also played at Rothko. The band is fairly new to the nyc scene and have influences that range from The Velvet Underground to the JAMC with a good dose of glam rock. There's a lot boy/girl tension on stage, and Jeni's vocals remind me of a young, angry Polly Jean. I hear they're big in their native Peru, hopefully the same will happen here for them. This is one of the reasons why i love getting new-ish bands we like to play Vicious, in the hope that eventually they'll start getting attention from the locals and beyond (Clap Your Hands And Say Yeah being the best current example).

Speaking of, VICIOUS will be celebrating its two years anniversary in July! TWO YEARS! Jasper and i have asked our favorite Vicious graduates to play a two-nights extravaganza that will take place at both Rothko and Southpaw. I'll be be giving out more details soon, so stay tuned...

This friday, a local band who has yet to play Vicious (!!), Sam Champion is doing their first appearance at the Bowery Ballroom opening for Rogue Wave, before going on tour with them. All of you 90's indie rock lovers would completely fall for this band if you have not already... i say go see them before they get big.

Also this weekend, a band who has played Vicious (and will again on our anniversary), Dirty on Purpose is playing the mercury lounge on saturday night. They're re-releasing their much adored EP on their new label, and they want everyone to celebrate the occasion with them. DoP put on a killer show in case you have yet to see them live. Of course, a release show will not be complete without a good afterparty like the one they have planned at The Hanger Bar. An evening not to be missed. All of it brought to you by the good people at Loose Record.

toi mon toit

Big thanks to all who came to Le One Night Stand on thursday night! I really had the best time playing my favorite french pop. The songs i played that went over the best were covers of well known songs, such as These Boots are Made for Walking (covered in french by Eileen), Paint it Black (covered in french by Marie Laforet), Close to Me (covered in french by -M-). I started my set with a bunch of 60s songs (of course played Serge Gainsbourg) and worked my way towards the 80s, and played tunes by Ellie Medeiros, Partenaire Particulier, Les Rita Mitsouko and Etienne Daho, just to name a few. Sheila B. and Josh Styles & Peppermintwist played lots of great 60s stuff, they're all quite the expert in that era i have to say. The night was such a success that it wouldn't surprise me if the party comes back sooner than later.

If you're looking for some more french music, french label Euro-Visions is hosting two parties this week, one at Joe's Pub tonight (6/13) and one at The Knitting Factory on friday (6/17). They're both FREE, here are the details:

"Xavier Ikeda, the head of the cult label Euro-Visions records, will be Djing with Sheila B. Xavier Ikeda, all the way from France, will offer a cool selection of yéyé, rare French groove, vintage & new electronica, continental soundtracks, Parisian jerk & much, much more!"

On saturday, i celebrated my actual birthday at MisShapes. The night that was supposed to be remembered as The Raveonettes After-Party / celebration of all the birthdays of the week, will now be remembered as The MisShapes Blackout 2005, where the power inside Luke & Leroy's went completely out. It was fun though, we all ended up hanging outside until the music came back on. All in all brilliant week and weekend, thanks all for coming out and for the birthday wishes.

Go over to Richard's website to download a great remix he did of Joanna Newsom's Brigdes and Balloons.
