dirty
I've been meaning to post this cool little thing taking place over the weekend:
Dirty on Purpose is filming a video on June 5th for All New Friends", and they need your help! The shoot is going to take place on June 5th (Location TBA in New York). They have to gather about 30 video cameras and 30 people willing to help shoot the video. Please forward this to anyone you know with a video camera.
They'll provide beer and food for everyone willing to partake -- and it will be tons of fun! If you know people who have cameras and are willing to donate or partake in the fun, please forward this. If you want to participate in the video, please email Jin at info@dirtyonpurpose.com with the subject line "Music Video". Please include your name and phone number.

Now that everyone's talking about Karen Elson, i wanted to link back to this rave review i wrote of a show she played opening for the Secret Machines in 2003. Since that night, Jasper and i have been trying to get her back on stage in nyc, but it hasn't happened yet, which is really too bad because she really was(is) that great a singer-songwriter when i saw her.

You must have heard about the DIESEL-U-MUSIC Awards by now. The awards spans all genres of music including Hip Hop/Soul, Rock and Electronic. This is a great way to provide exposure to deserving artists that are under the radar of mainstream and support artists on a local level. The award ceremony will take place this thursday June 9th at The Roxy where the three winners will play.
I have a pair of tickets + CD sampler + stickers + lighter to give away! If you would like to go, email me at contest@melodynelson.com with "Diesel-u-music" in the subject line. The winners of the tickets will be chosen by random drawing.

After a super busy weekend, i can finally update this site... I had two great DJ gigs over the weekend, one at Supreme Trading and one at Southpaw, thanks to all who came by and had fun with me.
The Cloud Room also played at Southpaw and unleashed one infectious song after another. It's remarkable how some bands can write songs that have an instant likeability factor, but i guess it's what pop music's all about? The Cloud Room write rock songs like that, full of hooks, polished, sometimes dancy, and simply, very good all around. Hey now now, the first single is the obvious example, but you'll be suprised by how many catchy songs their debut album contain. I definitely recommend it.
Last week at Vicious, a few great bands played and had me under their spell. Single Frame was one of them. I very recently started listening to them, and notably the new album Body/End/Basement, and was quite intrigued by their sound that mixes noise, electronica, and beats somewhat reminiscent of punk-funk. In a way they're undescribable. Not one song really sound alike, which could give them the title of inconsistent, but somehow it really works. Live, they exploded with pure energy and delivered a solid performance. To add to the music, they had a great light show, using TVs all around the stage, and video footage in the background.

Single Frame at Rothko.
Local power-punk-rock trio Demander also played that night and were so intense, Sivan broke her snare drum! I'd only seen these guys as a duo before, but thought that the addition of the guitar completed the sound they're going for.

Demander kicking ass.
Elephone are a band from the bay area that Jasper recommended to me so i gladly added them to the bill. I didn't know what to expect, but absolutely dug their set filled with dark indie-pop numbers. I'd really like see them again the next time they come around.

Elefone at Rothko.
