regret
I'm a bit bummed that i didn't see New Order last night, i was debating all day whether to search for a ticket or not, and at the end i didn't. One Louder's got a nice review of the show. I also missed Hooky's DJ set (and Shawn's!) at Hiro, because i fell asleep while resting. This is what happens when i go to bed at 4:30am on wednesdays and wake up at 7:30am, i pass out on thursdays. In any case, i heard Hiro was packed and great.
At this week's ATOMIQUE, there was a big group of belgian guys who kept requesting Bloc Party and The Killers... i played Bloc Party once, twice, and by the 10th request, i was seriously going to slap them all with the record after telling them over and over that i had already played them. Is it time to retire Bloc Party already??
Since i don't have much to report from this week, let's talk about music we've been listening to, shall we? I predict Tom Vek's I aint saying my goodbyes (Phones 12" version - as good as the original) to be the Banquet hit of the summer. Such a good song, watch the semi-creepy video here. In fact the whole album is great. The Editors' Munich has greatly grown on me.
I recently got the new Interpol remixes (done by 3 of the band members) as part of the C'Mere single release, and was genuinely impressed by Paul's remix of NARC... the song is completely stripped down to almost just vocals, it gives it an entirely different, darker vibe. The other 2 remixes are good but not as big a departure from the original versions. My favorite remix is actually the Fog Vs Mould For The Length Of Love, a collaboration between Bob Mould and Sam Fogarino (thanks anonymous for the info on that one). They added a great dance/house beat to it that makes the song danceable and very easy to mix. Speaking of mixes, i'm currently working on a small mix that i'll post here very soon to give you an idea of what goes down at Atomique.
Stuff going on this weekend...
The Picture play Sin-é tonight
Saints + Lovers play the mercury lounge saturday night.
Unisex Salon headlines Tiswas saturday night.
The Tarts of Pleasure spin at their weekly Stolen Transmission party tonight at The Orchard Bar.
MisShapes' got The Syrup Girls as guest DJs on saturday night.
Classic joke of the day:
I was just listening to Gang of Four live on KEXP when host Kevin tells the band that they've been getting lots of emails that were mostly thank yous to the band... one of the band members quickly said "one of them was from Franz Ferdinand, right?"

i turn my camera on
I'm behind everyone on this one, but last week's performance by The Futureheads at SPINHouse live was phenomenal. I really really like these guys. Read this review by The Husky.

The Futureheads acoustic at Spin.
Right before i started spinning at Tiswas on saturday, i got to see The Dirty Things from Chicago play. For those who may remember a music blog called Ypersound, this is Ryan's band whose CD i've had for months, but have not listened to yet. Shame on me because they're quite good. Lots of spastic energy (á la Moving Units) and a strong late 70s post-punk influence. Giving all you got makes up for a lot in terms of a good performance, and this trio really works hard onstage. They'll be back in nyc soon enough, in the meantime, here's a song:
The Dirty Things :: New Dance [MP3]
The new Spoon album Gimme Fiction comes out next tuesday, and if you pre-order it on the Merge Records web site, you may win a rare promotional only 7" of I turn my camera on. I doubt this would be an incentive to pre-order the album for anyone who reads this (except for my parents of course), but that 7" in question was designed using a photo of my eyes on the cover! As with all the other Spoon artwork for Gimme Fiction, the cover was photographed/designed by the incredibly talented Sean McCabe. It goes without saying, i love the design and i am very honored to be part of the Spoon artwork, a rarity no less. In case you haven't heard the song yet:
Spoon :: I turn my camera on [MP3]
Stream the entire album here, with a new song added up until the release.
