girl from mars
Tonight, I'm spinning at LIT upstairs as part of Justine D.'s Aktion party, 11-4am! If you feel like staying in brooklyn, check out Chris' Britpop night at Magnetic Field.
Saturday night, may i recommend you go over to Southpaw for their big party JELLY Party? This week, DJ AYRES (The Rub) and DJ Nick Catchdubs spin, starts at 11pm, $5.
Of course, there's also MisShapes with DJ Junior Sanchez and a special guest DJ whose new single is so dancy, it has quite impressed me.
If you missed the Nouvelle Vague show in nyc, check out this pristine video footage of their recent appearance on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic. They played almost everything from the show, and added their Devo cover at the end.
A quick review from my busy week, i'll have more to say about tuesday wednesday and thursday over the weekend. For now...
Monday night, i ended up going to see Ash and The Bravery at the Bowery Ballroom, a last minute decision after a ticket presented itself to me. There was a time, i was quite into Ash, but as months went by, i got more detached and it definitely felt that way at the show. The fact that i wasn't expecting to see them didn't help, since i usually amp myself up before a show. Don't get me wrong, the band delivers some serious rock live, almost of anthemic level, but i didn't feel it this time. I haven't listened to Meltdown yet, is it any good?
Now onto the band everyone loves to hate and hates to love, The Bravery. I would say that since their humble beginnings last year, the live show hasn't changed much, meaning there is still something off onstage. Not sure what it is, but the performance is not the most impressive. And while i may not like their live shows, as someone whose weekly mission is to make the kids dance, i can not deny the power of the hooks of some of the songs on their debut album. It's just as simple as that, when the formula is there and you have the right mix of beats and melodies (and some of their tunes definitely have those ingredients), then it works for the feet. Not sure how long before i get sick of it, but for now it works.

New Order's new album is out next week, and from the one listen i've had, it sounds like classic NO. You can stream the entire Waiting for The Sirens' Call album here.
You can also come to ATOMIQUE tonight for a preview of the album as well as some very cool giveaways!!

Attention musicians, an established local band is looking for a drummer, email tonyfantiosi@yahoo.com if you're interested:
"We are a a fairly established new york band with a manager and a booker blahblah. We are really serious about our music and practice a lot but also like to make a lot of stupid noise sometimes. Our cd got lots of good reviews, we charted at #12 i believe on cmj and we just finished sxsw and touring the country. Our collective favorite bands include my bloody valentine, sonic youth, yo la tengo, new order, spiritualized, mogwai etc etc
You should be under or very close to 30.... Want to tour/practice regularly....
Hit your drums hard. Tell me about your experience etc and we will send you a link... thanks"

Annie had only played a handful of gigs before playing nyc on thursday night and it showed! Though adorable, the girl had no stage presence and seemed nervous the whole time she was in front of the adoring crowd at the Tribeca Grand. The performance was short and enjoyable mostly due the vibe in the venue, but i would say that Annie's dancy pop music is best listened to on the dance floor while dancing with your friends - or in your bedroom in front of the mirror if you're not the type to go out dancing.

On saturday, i got to see local boys Elkland open for english duo Erasure. Elkland was not only super comfortable on the big stage, but they also sounded fantastic and much more solid than the last time i saw them (over a year ago i believe?). The hardcore Erasure fans who were there early seem to agree with me. They played their edgy and angular synth-pop songs off their debut album including Apart, the first single. The local quartet couldn't have found a better band to open for (and go on tour with) in terms of expanding their fanbase and gaining exposure.
By the time Erasure took the stage, i had never seen Irving Plaza so packed in my 7 years in new york. Packed with all ages fans who came to cheer and sing along their favorite songs. When the curtains finally dropped Erasure appeared on what seemed a full on stage production set. Such a nice change compared to the stripped down rock shows i'm used to. There was a big decor in the background, beautiful lighting, back-up singers, costumes (Andy arrived with big white angel wings) and costume changes... It was great, though too bad i was too far to take photos. The duo gave their all during what i heard was a two hour set. Since i couldn't go through a song without at least 3 sneezes (i was sick most of last week and all weekend), i reluctantly decided to cut out after an hour of their set, though i made a point to stay through A Little Respect and Chains of Love. Nothing like hearing your childhood's greatest hits live.

Elkland opens for Erasure all 10 nights at Irving Plaza.
