surefire live

What to expect tonight:

Surefire hadn't played live in nyc in two months. During that time, they wrote new songs, rehearsed them, recorded and just became 100 times better than they already were. Everyone in the band is now singing harmonies/back-up, and the new songs they've been working on all screamed hit singles, no joke. Whereas before they wore their influences a little bit more on their sleeves, they have now developped their unique sense of power-pop/rock that i have no doubt will take them great places. Now we only have to wait for the new recorded material to make its way into our cd players, and we will all rest happy.

relief

Tonight you can see 4 great bands and give a little more money for the Tsunami Relief.

Tomorrow, you can do the same thing (give a little money for the Tsunami Relief) by seeing the just as great Asobi Seksu and Elkland play at Rothko.

Irving Plaza will be stealing Bowery's spotlight for a little while with upcoming shows by Phoenix, Erasuse, and (the most exciting to me) Gang of Four!!!

If you're going to SXSW this year (alas, i'm not), SPIN is offering a text messaging service that will be sending out a few messages per day with cool SXSW info to anyone who signs up. Subscribers will automatically be entered to win VIP entry into the SPIN party (and alledgedly the lineup is unreal), plus exclusive info on all the cool parties that aren't on the schedule. It's free and you'll only get 2-4 messages a day. To sign up, you just have to text SXSW to the number 68423 and you'll get instant confirmation.

decent days and nights

I'll pick up where i left off on thursday night when once again the party goers did not disappoint by braving the snow and making me pump the hits at Atomique until four in the morning. Thanks to The Tarts for the great music, and all of you who showed up and danced until you dropped (or rather until i dropped).

Jason has new tracks to download from Fiona Apple's never relased 3rd album.

Finally, my long awaited live review of The Futureheads at the bowery ballroom. Truth be told, i went in the venue skeptical. I listened to the album a few times, and though i loved their cover of Kate Bush's Hounds of love, i wasn't completely sold on the rest, but still wanted to give the band a chance after hearing rave reviews of their live performances. It didn't take long to convince me, second song into it, and i realized the show was absolutely electrifying (and apparently that was a weak performance by their usual standard). Plus, how can you not fall for a band who enters the stage with Queen playing? Besides that, i saw exactly what was raved about, four energetic guys playing 2 1/2 minutes rapid songs packed with choppy riffs and 3-parts singing that made me wish i knew the tunes and words a little better. I was actually surprised by how much i enjoyed the gig. It somehow got me really excited about music and took any jaded feelings i may have had away. It's such a recurrance with me, i'll hear music that does not resonate instantly but sometimes makes a lot more sense once i hear it performed. Needless to say, i've been listening The Futureheads' self-titled debut album at least once a day since the show. I'd seen The Shout Out Louds before, but this time as the openers, they sounded better and more together than i remembered them. The crowd seemed to really dig their sound as well.
