oh my god

I seemed to have had the same reaction as most people who attended the Kaiser Chiefs show on monday night at the mercury lounge. I went in with no expectations, only knowing one song, and left with a real appreciation for their electric and entertaining performance. I had definitely heard the Madness references on I predict a riot, but as they played their other songs, it became clear to me that they have some strong Supergrass (the oohs!) and early Blur influences as well.
Clap your hands and say yeah! did a nice job opening up the show, especially on their jumpier and poppier tunes. A little bit more stage enthusiasm would be more than welcome.

It's still not too late to go over the Gothamist's Movable Hype 2.0 show featuring four great bands, or to Rothko for some rock featuring Diamond Nights.

surprise me

Better catch up now on what happened last week, seeing as this and next week will be completely out of control for me!

Saturday, i made what probably was my last attendance at the Luna Lounge. Kinda sad, the room has great sound and vibe, and i saw lots of good bands there over the years. It reminded me of the last time i went to Brownies. At least my last Luna show was an excellent one since Sam Champion was on stage. These guys sure listened to a lot of Pavement growing up, but since there aren't that many new bands who have that influence, it was a very welcome sound and a solid show. I gotta add that if you closed your eyes, you could think that singer Noah Champion was replaced by Ben Kweller, as they have a strikingly similar voice, but then again Ben Kweller kinda sounds like Stephen Malkmus too. Sam Champion, who just got signed to Razor & Tie, will have an album out in June.

Last tuesday at Rothko i got to see four bands i'd never seen live before, which was really cool since i tend to go see the same bands a lot. Here's in the night in photos...

Gliss came from LA to seduce the new yorkers with their attractively noisy JAMC inspired set. Most impressive about this three-piece is how they each rotated instruments so seamlessly on stage.

Mancino could be best described as experimental pop. They come up with the most unexpected melodies and time changes. This is definitely a band to watch evolve in the months to come.

Dentista Dentista is a new version of Nimbus, though i'm not quite sure what has changed and who has left the band, but i can tell you that they are a lot faster and harder and much less synth-pop than i remember them to be.

Drawing from all kinds of great influences, The Picture is a passionate band who is probably the closest you'll get to your britpop fix in new york. They're opening for Longwave at Northsix on 2/25, get there early!

Stop by Pianos (upstairs) tonight after 7pm for the opening of a photo exhibit by photographer Stephanie Elia Cinelli. The exhibit will be up for a while if you can't make it tonight. Stephanie did the photography for the upcoming Benzos album artwork.

Check out photos of Ben Kweller at the Bowery Ballroom.
