here it comes
Last night was the "fuck the cold" night! It was beyond freezing, but that didn't prevent lots of brave new yorkers to come to ATOMIQUE and enjoy (the very popular) J Good Times' fantastically eclectic set! Jay played this one song that made my party 10 times cooler than it's ever been, i'm sure he'll write about it soon. Thanks people, thursdays have been really fun.
Anyone went to Diamond Nights at the Delancey last night and saw special guests Lansing-Dreiden play? Miss Divestar? I really tried to make it. Please let me know how it was. They'll be playing at the mercury lounge on february 17th, hopefully i'll be there.
Doves are playing bowery ballroom on march 15th in celebration/promotion of their new album Some Cities (out march 1st). As a long time fan, i've always been blown away by their live shows. Remember when they played the bowery early 2001 and a little band (that only few knew then) called The Strokes were the openers? I do too. On a side note, i've said this before (but too lazy to look through the archives right now), can we please not call Doves: "The Doves"? For some strange reason, that "the" that everyone's incorrectly adding to the band's name is a big pet peeve of mine.
Some things to do this weekend:
A couple of very highly recommended shows featuring rising singer/songwriter Laura Burhenn. I've talked about Laura's music before, if you're a fan of Nina Simone and Fiona Apple, you'll love Laura Burhenn's delicate sound and breathtaking live performances. She's playing tonight (on a grand piano) at a new venue called Rockwood Music Hall on 184 Allen St (between stanton and Houston) at 9pm, and tomorrow at Pianos upstairs at 7pm (free).
Also tonight, if you want to get your dance on, the MisShapes crew is DJ-ing @ Trash, the party (not the venue).
On sunday, if you decide to stay home, listen to EVR from 4pm to 6pm during Jenny Jeanz' show Hi Low and Inbetween where one of my favorite local DJs Karibomb will be the guest DJ.

The Benefit for Sarah Flynn on tuesday night was really great and packed, thanks to all who came to support the cause.
Apparently Death From Above 1979 cancelled their mercury lounge show tonight, i hope they come back soon (and not on a thursday when i have a party to run) because i'm really into their album You're a woman, i'm a machine, and i heard that live they're super loud and impressive. This song is especially infectious:

Karen told about this new-ish UK band Maximo Park that i should know about, and it just so happens that Chris has posted some more info about them along with a track. If you're a Franz fan, you'll definitely dig this song:

hell yes
Tonight is the benefit show for Sarah Flynn of spinART Records. The line up is great, and the cause is even greater so brave the cold and come to Rothko. Tickets are still available here.
In case you haven't seen it yet, here's the Beck video for new single Hell Yes. I was ready to sing "where it's at?" at any point of the song!

worlds apart
Thanks to Scott for posting the new Bjork video directed by Spike Jonze. Not only do i love this video, but it's also giving me the desire to actually listen to Medulla, which i've completely ignored last year, something rather unusual for such a big Bjork fan like myself.
On another note, i have no idea why all these years i thought that i wouldn't really like And you will know us by the Trail of Dead. I always thought they'd be too loud, too hard or just "too" something for my taste. That and the fact that i've been convinced that i was destined to miss them every time they came through town (i left their bowery ballroom show early in 2002 after being striked with sudden illness, and i missed them at the Siren festival last year). Well, i've been totally wrong. After seeing them play at Rothko on friday night not knowing one song, i immediately turned into a new fan. The band played mostly songs from the new album (out tomorrow) with a couple of older ones. In between songs, they rapped and did a quick cover of Too sexy by Right Said Fred. Brilliantly funny. I love their post-hardcore sound because it's still largely filled with melody. We'll be doing a listening party for Worlds Apart this week at Atomique, all details soon!
A couple of very dark and far away photos...
