golden touch
I don't know what it is about Razorlight, but their after-parties have produced some of the best ATOMIQUE parties we've had... must be their golden touch (oh man that is so fucking bad of me!). Thanks to all who graced us with their presence. There were a bunch of cute english lasses last night who literally only wanted me to spin The Libertines all night. Interestingly enough, i had brought the I get along 12" and the new album with me, and i never bring along, let alone spin, The Libertines... must have been their lucky day! One band i meant to include on my set, but didn't get the chance to, was LCD Soundsystem, whose upcoming debut album promises to be one of my favorites this year. Check out these streams:
LCD Soundsystem :: Movement WM 56 | WM 100 | RP 56 | RP 100
LCD Sound System :: Daft Punk Is Playing At My House WM 56 | WM 100 | RP 56 | RP 100
You should read this interview with James Murphy, who's got some pretty entertaining answers. I was just thinking, if i had to choose between Homework and Discovery... hm, nevermind, i couldn't.

Before playing their sold-out bowery show, canadian twin sisters Tegan and Sara played a sweet and short acoustic set at the SpinHouse live series. I've been meaning to listen to their new album So Jealous, but now i'm definitely going get it. Though very nasal-y, the girls have great voices and can harmonize like it's nobody's business. Plus their songs are just pure pop catchiness. The great thing about seeing them live (and the one thing i remember when i saw them open for Ryan Adams) is that they have hilarious stage banters where they tell stories about their family and make fun of themselves. They opened their set with this song:
Tegan and Sara :: I know I know I know (mp3)

Tegan and Sara (in that order).

I've been talking every day about The Dears / Benzos / Saints+Lovers / The Headset show at the mercury lounge, so let's continue the daily update as i got this in my inbox: for those who didn't buy tickets on time, you can win a pair of tickets through Gothamist.
Tonight starts the Pianos residency of local band Clap your hands and say yeah! They played Vicious last month, and, while promoting, i mistakenly called them "Clap your hands and say hey!"... I have a feeling i won't be the only one to mess up that name. As Husky G. suggested, we should start calling them "Clap your hands and say awesome!". They left me a great first impression, and as i'm hearing and reading about them more and more, it wouldn't surprise me if they get many more fans in the weeks to come. Check them out live and listen to this song:

This news from last week, via jjjay... Hollywood's all ready to start pre-production on the movie about Ian Curtis. I'm very pleased that Anton Corbijn was chosen to direct the movie, not only because it makes sense (he directed Atmosphere), but also because he is one of my favorite photographers (i especially like his book WERK). As to who will play Ian, that hasn't been decided yet.

not going anywhere
The word in the street is that The Dears with Benzos, Saints+Lovers and The Head Set show at the mercury lounge this saturday is about to sell out, so hurry and get your tickets.
The show friday night at Southpaw was phenomenal. La Laque opened with a perfect set that was sultry, intense and dramatic. This was the best show of theirs i have seen so far, and being a sucker for strings, their violinist was probably my favorite part. It also looked like they gained at least 100 new fans at the show considering how many people rushed to get on the mailing list. Then Keren Ann came on and blew everyone away. It was her on the acoustic guitar, a trumpeteer, a keyboard player and an electric guitar player... her beautiful voice over these 4 subtle instruments made for some of the most georgeous music and arrangements i've heard in a long time. I would say, musically she stands somewhere between Cat Power and Hope Sandoval. She played a mix of her 4 albums, with lots of songs in english. When i asked for Un dimanche en hiver, she was totally taken by surprise by the request of such an old song (what can i say, i've been a fan since the first album) and apologized for not remembering how to play it... i felt band for requesting the song! The audience seemed completely enamored by her honest and vulnerable performance, and just like last month with Phoenix, i couldn't help but feel the good'ole french pride.
As for me, i had one of the best time dj-ing in between the bands. The mix i played was a bit all over the place, but i did insert a few of my favorite french tunes. The best part was spinning for an audience who was genuinely into music and showing it.

La Laque at Southpaw.

Keren Ann winning the hearts of many.
