supreme trading

Crashin'In is hosting its weekly party tonight at Supreme Trading in Williamsburg, and i'm guest DeeJaying (around 11pm) alongside DJ Oil and Gerald. I heard the party and venue were both fantastic. Hosts Lio and Marc will also be celebrating The Life Aquatic film release. It should be a fun night.

Speaking of, last night's Atomique was great, thanks and come back for some more next week!

On tuesday, i'm hosting an amazing show at Rothko. So much so that i am going to start the buzz on every band on this lineup, and not just because i booked the night and i want you all to be there, but because each of these local bands have so much appeal and potential, that i bet you after tuesday, you'll be hearing so much more about them. Seriously, don't miss the show on tuesday, come early it starts at 8pm...

8pm - Die Romantik [Imagine Chopin meets Serge Gainsbourg]
9pm - Soft [You like The Stone Roses? You will freak out over this band]
10pm - A Place to Bury Strangers [They will make your ears bleed and your jaw drop. Some say they're reminiscent of The Jesus and Mary Chain]
11pm - Sonoma Aero [Fans of Swervedriver, here's your new favorite band]

Check out our Vicious website for more info.

Before i forget, thanks to you peeps who listened to East Village Radio on sunday afternoon, it was a lot of fun. The best part about EVR is that it's basically in a storefront on 1st avenue, so people pass by and look at you with eyes of astonishment and sometimes they stop to chat, it's very cool. I played the trademarks (the songs i usually spin) mixed in with other tunes i like. Jenny Jeanz and i played 3 tracks each for two hours. Jenny went on first (and well my first song was an obvious choice), so you can figure out who played what:

Lemon Jelly - Stay with You Rolled The Fruity Track EP (all 3 songs)

Serge Gainsbourg - Requiem pour un con
Lush - Ciao!
Asobi Seksu - Merry Christmas (I don't want to fight tonight)

Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3
Mull Historical Society - How Bout I love you More
Super Furry Animals - Sidewalk Serfer Girl

Soulwax - Any Minute Now
The Smiths - Stop me if you think you've heard this one before
Sons and Daughters - Hunt

Os Mutantes - A minha Menina
MIA - Galang
Prodigy - Girls

PJ Harvey - Dress
Soft - Lucky Jam
Home Video - That you might

The Verve - Monte Carlo
Ian Brown - Keep what you got
Kasabian - Reason is Treason

Saints and Lovers - Kiss it goodbye
-M- - Close to me
Joe Jackson - Steppin' Out

The Avalances - A different Feeling
Kings of Wooworths - "Sunken" Field
Super Furry Animals - A Touch Sensitive

Inouk - No danger
Wire - The 15th
David Bowie - Ashes to Ashes

Remember when i saw Joseph Arthur at CMJ and mentioned he played a beautiful cover of The Smiths' There is a light and it never goes out? Here is the song taken from one of his live sets:
Joseph Arthur :: There is a light and it never goes out [MP3 + Stream]

I wanted to share a few words about the first Phoenix show in new york last wednesday. In short, it was incredible, in a very unexpected way. How so? Because they came across as so much more than just the poppy-cheesy act that they are on albums. They showed substance, soul and enthusiasm. They rocked out (much more than on the recordings) and mellowed out at the right times. They teased the audience, made them clap, scream and dance. Basically, they were a class act. I'm not just saying that because they're from Paris, and i'm from Paris... although, i'll admit, the pride factor kicked in when the band introduced themselves as "We're Phoenix from Paris" and the crowd kept cheering while i kept telling to myself, finally a contemporary french band that sort of makes it over here and that i can be proud of! Songs from both albums were played, that included the 9 minutes long Funky Squaredance and Everything is everything not once, but twice! It was by far the most fun set i've seen all year. Of course, the night was made complete with two other favorite bands of mine opening. First Benzos, whom i had missed a few times and was so happy to see sounding better than ever. The songs they write have such great layered guitars, lush melodies and an impressive vocal range. Don't be surprised if you hear a lot more about Benzos in the new year, they have a debut album coming out in the spring and from what i heard live, it's going to be sickly good. Inouk played in front of the packed Bowery with such confidence and comfort. They can so easily navigate between the familiar and the marginal without ever completely falling into one or the other category, which is exactly why i think their debut album No Danger is one of the best records of the year. They are a solid band at all levels, and on wednesday night when i was being asked "a year ago, did you ever think they'll get here?"... my answer was 'no', but now i can't believe i ever had any doubts.

radio

I'll be guest DeeJaying today on East Village Radio during Jenny Jeanz' show "Hi Low and Inbetween" from 4-6pm (EST)! It'll be streaming live, so tune in and expect a good mix of all kinds of music and bands i love. This is very exciting to me, as radio was my first love. I started my journey into the music world about 10 years ago by being a DJ at WUOG, Athens, Ga's college radio station. Great times and memories.

I'm stealing this story from la Blogotheque, check out Free Fiona!, the site created by fans who are trying to get Sony to release Fiona Apple's completed third album, Extraordinary Machine. Allegedly, Sony shelved the record because it wasn't commercial and marketable enough, and due to her contract with them, she can't release it anywhere else. Hopefully, this will get resolved somehow.
