Last night's ATOMIQUE was so good, thanks to everyone who came and enjoyed the many giveaways! Also big thanks to Tony Fletcher, who played a fantastic set that included a series of Joy Division covers that all sounded so good and different, you'd never know they were JD songs. We also chatted about new music and realized that we both love Warp Records band Home Video's Citizen EP, from which Tony played a track. I played the Brit Daniels Slow Hands remix, the new U2 single Vertigo, REM's Radio Free, Sons and Daugthers' Hunt, and a remix of The Killers' Somebody Told Me by King Unique.

Next monday, Dennis Cahlo and Sune (The Raveonettes) will be taking the night over while i'm in Paris visiting the family... which by the way, parisian readers, if you know of any good shows, parties, etc.. happening next week, send the info my way!

And finally, watch Har Mar Superstar's video for DUI:

CMJ 2004

CMJ 2004 IN IMAGES

Wednesday
Wednesday started with a non-CMJ show at Snitch, the new venue for The Tarts of Pleasure's new party! The party was so much fun, tons of peeps were there and the music was great. Uk band Apartment went on first, and had the same vibe as the new crop of bands following the footsteps of Franz Ferdinand. Apartment definitely has potential to outgrow that label, i'm keeping my ears open.

Pretty in black... Madison Strays is one of those bands that are getting stronger by the performance, and who will soon be adored by a ton of people.

Thursday
The night started with Inouk at the Bowery, who have been on tour and were showing how fucking tight they've gotten over the months! Their album No Danger is so good, it'll end up on my top 5 of the year for sure.

Sons and Daughters definitely left an impression when they opened for Franz Ferdinand. Getting to see them closer and clearer at Irving Plaza confirmed that they were one of the better buzzworthy acts this year at CMJ.

Went back to the Bowery for the Astralwerks filled line-up, and arrived right during VHS or Beta's set... why i've overlooked this band in the past remains a mystery, because it turns out that they're totally up my alley!

The last band of the night, The Concretes, not only had major sound problems, but also suffered from super high expectactions from the crowd. Unfortunately, they didn't deliver as anticipated. Too bad because the debut album is really solid.

Friday
The early evening started off with an incredible performance by Joseph Arthur at the Living Room. A one-man band, whose music is worshipped by anyone who's ever heard it, myself included. He treated us to a splendid cover of The Smiths' There is a light that never goes out.

After unsuccessfuly trying to see The Faint, i stopped by Plaid to check out the good ole dirty Detroit rockers, The Von Bondies. Whether you like their music or not, you gotta admit that they're great at what they do.

A quick stop by Pianos for We Ragazzi, whose last two songs i caught. The last one sounded especially good, if anyone knows what it was called, let me know!

Friday night ended at the Luna Lounge with a JJJay-recommended band, These Bones, who gave me that last rock buzz and raw energy i needed for the day.

Saturday:
That day i realized that i love seeing shows in the daytime, and melodic californian rockers Dios (or i guess Dios Malos now) were the perfect opening act for my saturday marathon.

Then it was back at Pianos for some dancy-post-pre-neo-punk-rock with Controller Controller. A kick-ass band led by a Gwen-like voiced singer.

A stop at the Luna Lounge was mandatory to check our favorite youngsters, Surefire, who acted like such professional musicians when in the middle of a song, a string broke and the song went on while guitars were being switched in between lines being sung... now that's what i call multi-talented!

I stopped by the Fader party, where everything was running two hours behind, and where i got to catch a chaotic but very enjoyable performance by Inouk (see photo above). I then ran to Rothko for one of the strongest Asobi Seksu shows i've seen in a while, the sound was almost pristine and the room absolutely packed for them.

I made my last CMJ stop at Pianos where it was so crowded, people were standing on top of each other! Benzos was really on and left me on a total high as well as passed out of exhaustion on the floor of the venue... but not to worry, it was a great end to four straight days of show madness!

THE END...
