I heard that the Bjork listening party at Pianos this week was hot. Well, If you missed it like i did, come by ATOMIQUE @ Eleven downstairs lounge this monday night (8/30), where we will be the host, in conjunction with Filter Magazine, of the last new york listening party for BJORK's Medulla before its release on tuesday. We'll have copies of the album to give away, posters, stickers, postcards, and free Filter Magazines for you guys!
The party starts at 8pm, Medulla will be blasting at 9pm. Right after Greg K. and Geo of MisShapes fame will go on the decks and remind us that mondays are the new fridays...

memory
Here's a little spotlight on a singer-songwriter i've mentioned here once before. I saw Laura Burhenn again last week at Pianos, this time with a full band, and was blown away by her incredible talent. Jasper calls her new the Fiona Apple. I just call her an A&R dream. She possesses a sultry voice, intelligent writing skills, and a great sense of confidence... Backed by her band, her soft songs come alive and take on a higher level of intensity, but even without the band, her voice alone will leave you mesmerized. She's also not afraid to experiment with music, as her latest album shows. An accomplished piano player, it also doesn't hurt that she's easy on the eyes. If my predictions are right, it won't take that much more time for her to blow up.
Songs to listen to:
Helicopters
White noise

Laura Burhenn unleashes her sultriness at Pianos.

it's you
Let me start by thanking everyone who showed up to the first ATOMIQUE on monday night. Not only was it a blast to spin a variety of stuff (think Wire, Erlend Oye, My Bloody Valentine and Soulwax all in one set), but it was nice to see a lot of familiar faces enjoying our favorite tunes. ATOMIQUE will be taking place every monday, so come by each week for a dose of good music and good times!
What else exciting is happening?
Inouk's great debut album No Danger dropped in a store near you yesterday. A 2004 must have.
I saw Surefire last week at the Luna Lounge. The quartet has been writing new songs so immensely good, their talent scares me sometimes. I hear new material is being recorded, that's great news.
Saturday, i was at Pianos for The Sons of Sound's third show and witnessed countless of more ears conquered by the powerful trio. They played one new song called It's you that will most definitely become a crowd favorite. Their set was extremely tight and solid, and getting better each time i see them. The band's mixing some songs right now, hopefully, i'll be able to steal something and post it here.
Also playing that night was A Place to Bury Strangers, who completely surprised me. I had no idea what they would sound like, but ended up being right up my alley... i would say their music is reminiscent of Joy Division and The Jesus and Mary Chain. They also had cool visuals in the background, and a very tight drummer. Definitely a good match on the bill with The Sons of Sound.
