bad girls
The last night of The Blondes, Inc's residency was a great night for music. Everytime someone asks me what The Blondes, Inc. sound like, i can never answer the question properly, and it drives me nuts because they're so great and i don't want to label them as anything or something they're not. Best is if you see them play in the near future, because they really are that good.
Other Passengers took me by surprise, by good suprise that is. They were loud, very loud, in that Sonic Youth kinda way loud. Add to that some post-punk influences and you have a solid mix of melody and noise.
I've been trying to catch The Affair for months, and in all honesty, i had low expectations and left quite impressed. I love their Blondie vibe, and especially their singer's beautiful and strong voice. Great stage presence as well.
So i'm off to Coachella! This year, unlike last, i'm obviously more interested in the bigger bands than the smaller ones. Hope we all survive in the freakin' heat wave.
If you're in nyc this weekend:
- Surefire plays sin-é on sunday.
- Mommy and Daddy plays somewhere on sunday. Can someone tell me where, i couldn't find the venue!
- Asobi Seksu is having a listening party at Serena on monday night with free drinks and great DJs. The album is officially out on tuesday!

FEARLESS is having a wrap-up party tonight at Pianos!
Scout and The Twenty-twos, two of my favorite local bands, are playing downstairs. Ultragrrrl and i will be DJ-ing upstairs! I go on at 9pm. Drink specials will be served from 9-10pm.
Then stay at pianos for the weekly UP party for more great bands and DJs.

Tonight is the last night of The Blondes, Inc.'s residency at sin-e. It should be a really great time considering the fantastic lineup. I'm also DJ-ing in between bands to keep you all entertained.
11pm - The Affair
10pm - The Blondes, Inc.
9pm - Prosaics
8pm - Other Passengers
DJs Melody Nelson + Dennis Cahlo
I had the best weekend ever! Surefire played MisShapes on saturday, and it was like having them play my living room. Sure the sound wasn't madison square garden, but the place had a total rock'n'roll vibe, the kind where you hope the band will go insane and break everything. Surefire are too nice to break anything, but they sure know how to rock. Meanwhile, the DJing at MisShapes gets more and more risky, and more and more amazing.
Sunday was my favorite day, a day where art and music fit perfectly together. Earlier, i witnessed Sean McCabe put all of his hardest work up on the walls at Pianos. Needless to say, the images are just stunning in person, and if i had the means, i'd buy the entire strip of photographs and put it up my apartment. Please take the time to stop by Pianos upstairs anytime after 8pm and look at Sean's pieces, they'll be up until may 23rd.
There was a really good crowd all day for Sean's opening and all night for the fourth installment of the 7th Day Residency featuring The Sons of Sound (the official band name for Dennis Cahlo's new project). Opening this time was The Boy Bathing, who writes captivating lyrics and sings them with such intensity, Hightower Smith, whose talent is taller than him and songwriting range is incredible, and Kevin Devine. It was my first time seeing Kevin Devine, and i was very impressed by his stage presence. The whole time, i kept thinking that The Boy Bathing and Kevin should tour together because they have a similar writing sensibility.
The Sons of Sound played their last residency show, and once again blew everyone away. In fact, i don't think i heard one person talk during the entire set, that's how mesmerizing they are. They had an EP for sale that features three beautiful lush songs from the residency set, try to get it at one of their gigs. And if you missed the residency gigs, their next show is on may 23rd at Southpaw.
