yesterday never tomorrows
I always take too long to review stuff and then my entries are like a million pages long. Hi, my name is audrey hyperbole.
Is everyone a freakin' aquarius? So many birthdays this month! Happy birthday to Sarah, Doug, Dan, Laura and everyone else who was born around now.
I want to reitirate how much fun The Day After party at Pianos was. I didn't really have time to mention or promote the new event Jasper and i are launching. But the idea is simple. We wanted to start the year with a new event different from Vicious. So i suggested a day party, something laid back, where we can actually sit and talk, and drink and eat, and most importantly listen to music. We called it The Day After, cause we assumed that people would be coming to Pianos at 4pm on a sunday afternoon, still hungover and fucked up from their late saturday night partying, shows or whatever. So there we had the idea. Pianos kindly agreed to give us their upstairs space, open their kitchen and bar and set up the decks. As Sarah said, it's nice for a change to have a party where we don't need to make people dance and the DJs can play pretty much anything. For our first sun-day after, Greg K, Ultragrrrl and Dave from The Stills DJed. They all played great tunes: old, new, french, canadian, rock, pop, quiet, loud, we heard it all and sang along to all of it. We set up a big screen in the back of the room and we did sorta lower the music during the superbowl commercials and half-time.
So all this to tell you that this new little party was really great, and in fact so much so, that we couldn't wait another month to have it again and we'll be having another one this coming sunday the 15th, same time (4-8pm). The guest DJs will be announced soon, and since there won't be a superbowl that day, we'll be projecting movies in the background (on mute). This coming weekend is Valentine's day and President's day weekend, so mark your calendar and stop by, have a drink, request songs, have a good time.
Shows i saw these past 2 weeks:
Surefire at Arlene's Grocery: what was the most amazing about this show is how professional this young band really is. Despite feeling very ill, Ben got onstage, did his thing like nothing was wrong, and waited til the very last note to run off stage, and well, no one knows what happened next, but we hope he's feeling better. And by the way, the show kicked ass.
The Stills at the bowery: I believe this was the first time i saw them headline a show, and they brightly shined. They were so grateful and thankful on stage, it was very nice to witness them appreciating all the attention and support. They played all the catchy songs from their debut album, with some added twists and jams here and there. During the encore, Dave (drums) got up and sang, did you know he sings on the album? He also sings Talk to me on their Rememberese EP... i had no idea. They're on tour right now, and i bet they'll need some major back alignment surgery once they're done... just kidding! Go check them out.
The killers at the bowery opening for The Stills: i'd seen them during this year's CMJ and quite liked their music/set which i had described as a mix between Interpol and Hot Hot Heat, in other words, a bit on the darker side but still very dancy. This time, i wasn't that enthusiastic with their performance and i just couldn't pinpoint what it was. I'll probably figure it out next time i see them live.
The Blondes at the mercury lounge: The Blondes are a bit hard to describe, because they sound like no one and everyone at the same time, which is actually a great thing. Their upcoming debut album really shows the eclecticism of their music and proves that these guys can play in the most unexpected ways and still keep you very interested. Did i mention that their album was produced by Richard Lloyd of Television? Pretty cool if you ask me.
Aurelio Valle at Acoustique at Sin-é: Aurelio brought one of his bandmates for this rare acoustic performance. He started his moody and beautiful set with a stunning cover of Patti Smith's Heroine, and went on to play a couple of familiar songs and a lot of new tunes the band's been working on. Let me tell you, if you like Calla, you'll love the new songs.
Dennis Cahlo at Acoustique at Sin-é: Dennis played yet another memorable solo show. Despite an awfully loud crowd, he showcased a handful of dazzling songs that got under everyone's skin, proving once again his enormous talent as a solo singer-songwriter. And as Jasper so nicely put it, you just can't help but be absolutely impressed with someone gifted with such vocal intensity and depth.
I have more to talk about, but i'm reaching the million page mark, so i'd better save some for tomorrow.
