labor of love
The Fever played Flyer Magazine's 5th anniversary party on wednesday night, and they were great! Their songs, especially Ladyfingers and Bridge & Tunnel, are growing on me like a fungus. Hey, it only took me three shows to get it...
They'll be playing tomorrow night at the NY: The Next Wave show at northsix alongside Stellastarr* (fresh off their UK tour), My Favorite, Oxford Collapse and Mazing Vids. Read a preview from Filter magazine.
Also happening tomorrow night is a fabulous party at Pianos in honor of the soundtrack release of documentary: As Daylight Breaks. Mary Timony, who wrote the original score, and friends will be playing, Ultragrrrl will be spinning and lots of special guests will be appearing. No advanced ticket sales, but guests may RSVP with their name, phone, and email to info@sassonpictures.com to reserve tickets at the door.
And as if there wasn't enough happening already tomorrow, one of my favorite rising bands, Asobi Seksu - whom i have yet to see live - is playing Tiswas. Since i can't be everywhere, one of you needs to go and enjoy it for me!

Rolling Stone wants you to vote for the best live band. The one and only 50ft Queenie got my vote.
Check out my friend Jeff's brand new blog... thoughts, music, life, arts, and much more.
Nice live review of The Raveonettes and Stellastarr* in the UK.
Let's talk about DoP (aka Dirty on Purpose), maybe you read about them here... maybe not. They played Luxx last night to a small but seemingly convinced crowd. Talk about next wave - DoP is definitely part of that next wave of talented new york bands. The show was "short and sweet" (as per Erika's words), and aside from sound issues on the vocals, the performance was very enjoyable. The band's musical influences seem to be more recent, more "modern". It's very refreshing. Look out for upcoming shows at Luxx and Sin-é...
Last night was also a great blog-night-out, miss jinners, jasper, and miss "i'm in detox" modernage were all there to share stories and a nice ride home... and yes Jasper and Jinners already have their DoP photos up! I need to learn from you people.

the conductor
The faint's show on saturday night is now one of the contestants for best show of the year... i dunno if it was the cool video footage in the background, the amazing gay dance moves, or simply the fact that the electro-new-wavy-rock songs just sounded perfect live. Simply, it was a great show all around. The irving crowd was set on fire when they opened with Glass dance world... but the place really went wild during Worked up so sexual. Wish i went back tonight for another dose.
I was able to see a little of Les Savy Fav's set. Enough to be impressed and get in the mood for what was to come, and definitely enough to get to see Tim play chimpanzee around the venue.

yeah new york
Miss modernage's part II of her Coachella/California trip... i never got the Polyphonic Spree orange trucker hat from the roadie, bummer. He kept telling me that he needed it cause he was bald under it... yeah whatever.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs gigs at Irving on wednesday and thursday were brilliant and insane, at least the crowd. Karen O is a lot less crazy on stage than say a year ago (those mercury lounge shows scarred me for life)... don't get me wrong, she's still the beer-spilling-mic-in-mouth-fun-dancing wacko rock star, but maybe the much bigger attention or the bigger stage has intimidated her a little, who knows...
In any case, all three of the yeahs delivered amazingly. On wednesday, the sound wasn't all that good, Karen's vocals were completely overpowered by the guitar. That night they opened with Modern Romance, played most of the album and less older songs. On thursday, they opened with Miles Away and closed with Modern Romance - played Art star, which they dedicated to us the crazy new yorkers. On wednesday, the crowd was moshing and being crazy... on thursday, the crowd was going fucking mental, one girl even fainted, ouch. On wednesday, we got Black Tongue, on thursday we got Tick. Both nights, Karen O dedicated Maps to her love Angus, to Emily, Brian's love, and to all of us motherfuckers, Nick's love...
Also, on wednesday, i caught The Greenhornes (but missed the first band), who sounded interesting and very Doors-y... on thursday, i caught The Icarus Line (but unfortunately missed Ssion), who sounded better to my ears than the first time i'd seen them.
The most hilarious part only happened on thursday when after the show, not one, but two guys approached electrogreg thinking he was Brian C... when the first one came up to him, we both looked with big WTF? expressions on our faces, but didn't think about it twice. When the second guy came over, we just laughed hysterically... but the dude did not want to believe that greg was not Brian. After the good laugh, we stopped by Socialism to say hi to Ultragrrrl, who was spinning her weekly party at its new location. fun times.
