in the walls

Stellastarr* was excellent! They played two songs i don't remember ever hearing before: Angela and In the walls, loved them both.
Go see them tonight!!

I probably won't be updating for the next four days because i am off to Co-COACHELLA! I'll bring you back all the goods next week... later!

untitled

Don't forget tonight in nyc, Stellastarr* @ Pianos and (well not really and, more like OR) The Stills @ Northsix.
Why don't you bookers, managers, whatevers consult each other before scheduling gigs? Since i have to make a choice, pianos it is. Thankfully, Elefant isn't involved (nothing to do with the music). And why on earth are they in love with Peaches?! freaks.

get your rocks off

Two things that shocked me at the Primal Scream show last night:
1. The venue was so empty when we got there, and didn't really get that packed... where's the love people?
2. Primal Scream fans are fucking violent. It wasn't like kids dancing and pushing a little, it was like kids with that "get out of my way because i'm gonna start moshing and hit the fuck out of you" attitude... why so much anger?

First off, Ria was right on with her observations from monday night's gig.
Last night, the guys were tight and into it. The set was loud, spacy, trippy and joyful. They played the hits and then some, including: Shoot speed kill light, Movin' on up , Swastika eyes, Accelerator, Miss lucifer, Get your rocks off, Rise...
Whatever Bobby's on, i want some. The man looks so good... i mean clearly, he moves and poses like a drunken girl, but he's a total rock star. My eyes were stuck between him and Mani, who has got to be the musician who most enjoys himself on stage (or at least shows the most signs of enjoyment). During the entire set, Mani was looking at everyone in the audience, trying to make eye contact and have conversations while playing bass. He kept staring and making fun at this one dude, who apparently was falling asleep?!?! The Primals were in such good mood, i still can't figure why so many people felt like beating the crap out of each other.

Opening band, The Icarus Line didn't do anything for me... they weren't horrible, but they weren't good either. If anything, they left me confused. We'll see how i feel after seeing them opening for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Elbow has an urgent request...

"A brand new elbow track currently titled 'Grace under Pressure' features the crowd singing "We still believe in love, so fuck you" recorded at the live show at Glastonbury 2002. As a thank you to the audience, we wish to collect the names of everyone who sang along to add to the credits on the album.
If you were at the show, please register at www.elbow.co.uk/glastonbury and add your name and email address for verification."

Do you think they'll know if i send my name even though i wasn't really there? It's always been one of my goals in life to be thanked in someone's album liners, you know right next to god...

family tree

Anyone caught 120 minutes hosted by Ben Kweller last night? Dude, it was like the melody nelson show, i should have hosted it! They played: Obstacle 1, Bandages, Date with the night, Wasted and Ready, Everywhere you turn, Crazy Beat, Seven nation army, Danger! Danger! High Voltage!... then it got really late and my eyes started to hurt so i had to turn off, but i know i missed some good ones!

Happy Birthday to Sandrine!

blackmath

Besides the fact that we have to go see them in freakin' huge venues, The White Stripes delivered a short, but great performance. The evening was special all around with Loretta Lynn opening the show as the second act. Who would have thought that the kids in the audience would embrace her like they did? When Jack came on stage, with his red and white cowboy suit, to sing a couple of songs with her, everyone seemed to be in country rock heaven. And how cute was it to see a happy and dancy Meg watch her idol from backstage? Very.
Suprisingly, the duo started the set the exact same way they did on last year's tour with Dead Leaves and went into I smell a rat. As usual, they played with no setlist and mixed songs from all four albums, though mostly from the last two, and even covered Mazzy Star's five string serenade (correct me if it's the wrong song). They came back for an encore, and played one of last year's favorite live cover Rated X, this time with the woman herself, Loretta Lynn.
The set felt shorter than the previous shows i've attended, and it was a bit strange to see them on such a big stage, but it seems that nothing comes in the way of Jack's talent. The man is brilliant, give him small stage, big venue, sucky crowd, skeptics, big fans, whatever, he always delivers.
Part of his brilliance is also to bring to the forefront some yet-to-discover talent (we remember last year's Brendan Benson and Whirlwind Heat as openers). This time, he chose another Detroit band named Blanche who fitted the bill perfectly with their pleasant country pop-rock.

After the show, we arrived to catch a couple of Mommy and Daddy songs at Tiswas... we went from one girl and boy duo to another, different style though. Mommy and Daddy kinda sounded like a mix between the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Liars, only if Karen O and Angus would leave their respective bands to start one of their own... Chaotic, dancy, heavy electro-rock. I'm curious to hear more.
The Fever headlined the night. First time i saw them, i liked them alright, but wasn't completely convinced. This time was much better. If they're lucky, they'll keep growing on me like that.
